Butt massage

Before we learn some basic glute massage techniques we have to learn what kinds of muscles our glutes are made up of. If we learn these we will be more familiar with what muscles we are massaging or targeting.

Butt massage: understanding the butt
The gluteous maximus, otherwise known as the butt, is actually a complicated structure just like all of your contractile structures. It is composed of three muscles: the first one is the gluteous maximus muscle which is probably the most well known of them. As you are already in a sitting position you can find this one by first finding your tail bone and then smoothing your left hand sideways down and to the left until you reach the base of your femur bone. The second one is the gluteous medius muscle and it covers the hip bone and ends abruptly at the femur; the third is the gluteous minimus muscle and it is the one located right below your hipbone on your side; it overlaps with the medius muscle. If you have trouble finding each of these do not worry it is indeed hard to tell where one muscle starts and the other ends!

Butt massage: the benefits
Butt massages can help with a variety of things. Massaging the glutes oddly enough can be very relaxing for people with severe menstrual cycles, lower back problems, muscular atrophy in the glute area and probably about anyone who works a nine to five who has to sit at a desk all day. Along with exercise butt massages also help tone the area and keep it firm.

Preparing for a massage
To prepare someone for a butt massage it is best to prepare the muscles. Muscles respond better when they are warmed up. This can be done by putting a heat pad on low heat on the buttocks for ten or so minutes. The massage can be done with or without massage oils. If you do not have a heat pad you can warm up the muscles by doing an effluerage massage. This is a massage that is done to warm up the muscles and it consists of light strokes in the glute or upper thigh area; you are to move your hand in a circular motion using the palm or the pads of your fingers.
Once your muscles have been warmed up you can start the next stage of the massage which is called petrissage. Remember it is important to get the glute muscles to a relaxed state in order to be able to progress to deep tissue massage. Deep tissue massage, or petrissage, consists of more heavy handed techniques of massage to reach the underlying muscles. You can use your knuckles, your elbows or heavy pressure in this phase of the massage. Use sweeping rhythmic movements when massaging. Focus or target each of the gluteal muscles mentioned above when massaging and massage the whole muscle in one sweeping motion. You can use different techniques such as rolling, kneading and pinching (which is grabbing the flesh with your hands to stretch it out).
